MATTHEW 20:1-16 GRACE IS NOT A COMPETITION

Year A, Wednesday of the 20th Week in Ordinary Time

In today's Gospel, Jesus tells the parable of the workers in the vineyard. Those who worked all day become upset when those who worked only one hour receive the same payment. Their problem is not that they were treated unfairly; it is that they cannot rejoice when someone else receives the master's generosity. Jesus reminds us that God's Kingdom is not based on competition or comparison. God gives according to His goodness, not according to our calculations.

How easily we fall into the same trap. We compare our lives with others and wonder, "Why does he have more? Why did she receive that opportunity? Why does someone who came to faith later seem to be blessed more than I am?" Even in our spiritual lives, we can compare our sacrifices, our service, or our years of faithfulness with those of others. But God's love is not a limited resource. Another person's blessing does not diminish what God has given us. When we compare, we lose gratitude; when we recognize grace, we begin to rejoice.

Perhaps today's Gospel invites us to ask ourselves: Can I genuinely rejoice when God is generous to someone else? Sometimes the hardest thing is not accepting God's blessings for ourselves, but celebrating them when they are given to another. The Lord invites us to stop keeping score and start giving thanks. We may have worked in His vineyard for many years, or we may have come only recently—but all of us are here because He first called us. Let us be grateful not for what we think we deserve, but for the extraordinary generosity of a God whose mercy is always greater than our calculations.
