MATTHEW 22:1-14 ARE WE READY FOR THE INVITATION?
Year A, Thursday of the 20th Week in Ordinary Time
In today's Gospel, Jesus compares the Kingdom of Heaven to a king who prepares a wedding feast for his son and invites many people to come. Surprisingly, those who are invited refuse the invitation, making excuses and choosing other things instead. The king eventually fills the banquet hall with people from the streets. Jesus reminds us that God's invitation is generous and offered to everyone, but we must freely respond to it.
We can easily recognize ourselves in those who made excuses. God continually invites us into a deeper relationship with Him, but we sometimes respond, "I am too busy," "I will do it later," or "There are more important things right now." Nothing we are doing is necessarily bad, but even good things can become obstacles when they consistently push God to the margins. The wedding garment in the parable also reminds us that accepting God's invitation should change the way we live. We cannot simply enter the feast; we are called to put on the life of Christ through love, mercy, forgiveness, and holiness.
Perhaps today's Gospel invites us to ask ourselves: If God is inviting me to come closer to Him today, what excuse am I making? The invitation is already there. God is not waiting for us to become perfect before He welcomes us. He simply asks us to respond and allow His grace to transform us. Let us not be so occupied with the things of this world that we miss the invitation to the eternal feast. The banquet is prepared; the question is whether we are willing to say yes.
