MATTHEW 17:14-20 FAITH BEGINS WITH TRUST
Year A, Saturday of the 18th Week in Ordinary Time
In today's Gospel, the disciples are unable to heal a boy who is suffering, and they ask Jesus why they failed. Jesus answers with surprising simplicity: "Because of your little faith." He goes on to say that faith even as small as a mustard seed can move mountains. The issue is not the size of our faith but whether we place it completely in God.
Many of us think that faith means never having doubts or struggles. But true faith is choosing to trust God even when we do not understand His plan. Like the father in this Gospel, we often come to the Lord carrying burdens that seem too heavy for us—problems in our family, concerns about our health, worries about the future, or prayers that seem unanswered. Jesus invites us to bring all of these to Him with confidence, believing that nothing is impossible for God.
Perhaps today's Gospel invites us to ask ourselves: What mountain in my life have I stopped believing God can move? Sometimes the greatest obstacle is not the problem itself but our lack of trust that God is still at work. A mustard seed is tiny, yet it contains the power of life. In the same way, even a small but sincere faith, placed in the hands of God, can accomplish more than we could ever imagine. Let us ask the Lord today to increase our faith—not so that life will be free of difficulties, but so that we will never face those difficulties without Him.
