MATTHEW 18:1-5,10,12-14 GREATNESS IN GOD'S EYES
Year A, Tuesday of the 19th Week in Ordinary Time - Memorial of Saint Clare

In today's Gospel, the disciples ask Jesus a question that many people still ask in different ways: "Who is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven?" Jesus responds by placing a little child in their midst. He teaches them that greatness is not measured by power, success, or recognition, but by humility, trust, and a heart that depends completely on God. He then reminds them that not even one of His little ones is forgotten by the Father, who tirelessly seeks out every lost sheep.

The life of Saint Clare beautifully reflects this Gospel. Born into wealth and privilege, she left everything behind to follow Christ in poverty, humility, and simplicity. She did not seek importance in the eyes of the world. Instead, she desired only to belong completely to Christ. Hidden behind the walls of her monastery, she became a light for the whole Church. Her life reminds us that holiness is not about being noticed by others but about allowing God to transform our hearts.

Perhaps today's Gospel invites us to ask ourselves: Where do I seek my worth—from the approval of others or from knowing that I am loved by God? We can spend so much energy trying to prove ourselves, comparing ourselves with others, or seeking recognition. Yet Jesus tells us that our greatest dignity comes from being His beloved children. Like Saint Clare, may we choose humility over pride, simplicity over self-importance, and trust over fear. When we place our lives completely in God's hands, we discover that true greatness is found, not in being above others, but in belonging completely to Christ.
