MATTHEW 16:24-28 LOSING TO GAIN

Year A, Friday of the 18th Week in Ordinary Time

In today's Gospel, Jesus gives one of the most challenging invitations in the Gospel: "Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me." These words remind us that being a disciple is not simply believing in Jesus; it is choosing His way of life every day. The cross is not a punishment from God but the daily sacrifices we make out of love for Him and for others.

Our world tells us to put ourselves first, to seek comfort, success, and recognition. Jesus teaches the opposite. He tells us that the person who tries to save his life will lose it, but the one who gives his life for His sake will find it. This does not mean we neglect ourselves; it means we discover our true life when we love generously, forgive freely, serve humbly, and place God's will above our own. The happiest people are often not those who have the most, but those who give the most.

Perhaps today's Gospel invites us to ask ourselves: What cross is Jesus asking me to carry today, and am I carrying it with love or with resentment? Every day offers us opportunities to deny ourselves—not in dramatic ways, but through patience with a difficult person, forgiveness after being hurt, faithfulness to our responsibilities, or choosing what is right over what is easy. When these sacrifices are united with Christ, they become a path to deeper joy and lasting peace. The paradox of the Gospel is true: when we give our lives away in love, we do not lose them—we finally discover them.
