Year A, Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord

Today we celebrate the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. On the mountain, Peter, James, and John catch a glimpse of Jesus in His divine glory. His face shines like the sun, His clothes become dazzling white, and the voice of the Father declares, "This is my beloved Son... listen to Him." This extraordinary moment strengthens the disciples before they accompany Jesus on the difficult journey to the Cross.

There are moments in our own lives when we experience God's presence in a powerful way—a retreat, a quiet time of prayer, the celebration of the Eucharist, or an unexpected answer to prayer. These moments are precious gifts, but they are not meant to be permanent mountaintop experiences. Like the disciples, we must come down the mountain and continue our daily lives. The purpose of those moments is to strengthen our faith so that we can remain faithful when we face suffering, disappointment, or uncertainty.

Perhaps today's Gospel invites us to ask ourselves: Whose voice do I listen to most each day? We are surrounded by voices telling us what to value, how to live, and where to find happiness. Yet the Father's command remains the same: "Listen to Him." When we listen to Christ in His Word, in prayer, and in the Eucharist, He gradually transforms us from within. The more we listen to Him, the more His light shines through our lives, enabling us to bring hope, peace, and love to those around us.
