MATTHEW 14:22-36 KEEP YOUR EYES ON JESUS
Year A, Tuesday of the 18th Week in Ordinary Time

In today's Gospel, the disciples find themselves caught in the middle of a storm. The waves are strong, the wind is against them, and they are filled with fear. Then Jesus comes to them, walking on the water, and says, "Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid." Peter steps out of the boat and walks toward Jesus, but the moment he takes his eyes off the Lord and focuses on the wind, he begins to sink.

How often that happens in our own lives. We begin with confidence and trust, but when problems arise, our attention shifts from Christ to our fears. We become overwhelmed by illness, family struggles, financial worries, or uncertainty about the future. The storms themselves are not what cause Peter to sink; it is losing sight of Jesus. Even then, when Peter cries out, "Lord, save me!" Jesus immediately reaches out and takes hold of him. Our faith may falter, but Christ never stops reaching out to us.

Perhaps today's Gospel invites us to ask ourselves: What storm is threatening my peace today, and where are my eyes fixed? If we focus only on our problems, fear will soon take over. But if we keep our eyes on Jesus, we will find the courage to keep moving forward, even when the waves are high. The storms of life may not disappear, but with Christ beside us, they will never have the final word. He is always close enough to take us by the hand and lead us safely through every storm.
