MATTHEW 13:47-53 LIVING WITH ETERNITY IN MIND

Year A, Thursday of the 17th Week in Ordinary Time

In today's Gospel, Jesus compares the Kingdom of Heaven to a fishing net that gathers fish of every kind. At the end, the fish are separated—the good are kept, and the bad are thrown away. Jesus reminds us that our lives are moving toward a final encounter with God, when what truly matters will be revealed. His words are not meant to make us fearful but to encourage us to live each day with eternity in mind.

It is easy to become absorbed in the things of this world. We spend so much energy worrying about our careers, finances, reputation, or daily responsibilities that we sometimes forget our ultimate goal. None of these things is wrong, but they should never take the place of God in our lives. At the end of our journey, the Lord will not ask how successful or popular we were. He will ask whether we loved Him, loved our neighbor, forgave those who hurt us, and lived as faithful disciples.

Perhaps today's Gospel invites us to ask ourselves: If I were to stand before the Lord today, what would He find in my heart? That question is not meant to fill us with anxiety but with hope. Every new day is another opportunity to begin again, to choose what is good, and to grow in holiness. God is patient and rich in mercy. If we open our hearts to His grace today, we can look forward to meeting Him one day with confidence and joy.
