JOHN 11:19-27 FAITH IN THE MIDST OF OUR QUESTIONS

Memorial of Saints Martha, Mary, and Lazarus

Today we celebrate the Memorial of Saints Martha, Mary, and Lazarus, three ordinary people who became extraordinary because they welcomed Jesus into their home and into their hearts. In today's Gospel, we meet Martha at one of the most painful moments of her life—the death of her brother, Lazarus. Even in her grief, she turns to Jesus and makes one of the greatest professions of faith in the Gospel: "Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God."

What is beautiful is that Martha's faith does not mean she has all the answers. She still wonders why Jesus did not come sooner. She still grieves. Yet she chooses to trust Him even when she does not understand His plan. That is what mature faith looks like—not the absence of questions, but the decision to keep trusting God in the middle of them.

The lives of Martha, Mary, and Lazarus remind us that holiness begins at home. Their home was a place of hospitality, prayer, friendship, service, and love. Jesus felt welcome there. Our homes, too, are meant to be places where Christ is present—not only through prayer, but through our patience, forgiveness, kindness, and care for one another.

Perhaps today's Gospel invites us to ask ourselves: When life doesn't go the way I expected, do I walk away from Jesus, or do I draw closer to Him like Martha did? Faith does not remove every sorrow, but it gives us the confidence to say, "Lord, I trust You." May Saints Martha, Mary, and Lazarus teach us to welcome Christ into our homes and hearts every day, and to trust Him even when His ways are different from our own.
