JOHN 12:24-26 A LIFE POURED OUT IN LOVE

Year A, Monday of the 18th Week in Ordinary Time

Feast of Saint Lawrence, Deacon and Martyr

In today's Gospel, Jesus says, "Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit." These words are fulfilled beautifully in the life of Saint Lawrence, whom we celebrate today. As a deacon of the early Church, Lawrence devoted himself to serving the poor and caring for those in need. When ordered to surrender the treasures of the Church, he presented the poor instead, declaring that they were the Church's true treasure. Soon afterward, he gave his own life as a martyr, becoming a grain of wheat that bore abundant fruit for the Kingdom of God.

Most of us will never be called to die for our faith as Saint Lawrence did. Yet every day we are invited to "die" in smaller ways—to our selfishness, our pride, our desire to have everything our own way. We die to ourselves when we forgive someone who has hurt us, when we give generously without expecting anything in return, when we choose to serve rather than be served, and when we put the needs of others before our own. These quiet sacrifices often go unnoticed, but in God's eyes they are the seeds that bear lasting fruit.

Perhaps today's Gospel invites us to ask ourselves: What is Jesus asking me to let go of so that my life can bear more fruit? The more tightly we hold on to ourselves, the less room there is for God's grace to work within us. But when we place our lives in His hands, He can accomplish far more than we ever imagined. Like Saint Lawrence, may we discover that the greatest treasure is not what we possess, but the love we are willing to give. A life poured out in service for Christ and for others is never wasted—it becomes a harvest of blessings that reaches far beyond ourselves.
