MATTHEW 14:1-12 THE COURAGE TO STAND FOR THE TRUTH
Year A, Saturday of the 17th Week in Ordinary Time

In today's Gospel, we hear the tragic story of the death of John the Baptist. John loses his life because he has the courage to speak the truth. He does not remain silent in the face of wrongdoing, even though he knows it may cost him everything. His faithfulness reminds us that following God sometimes requires courage more than comfort.

Most of us will never be asked to give our lives as martyrs. Yet every day we are faced with smaller moments that test our faith. It takes courage to be honest when it is easier to lie, to forgive when we have been hurt, to defend someone who is being treated unfairly, or to live our Christian values when they are unpopular. Like John the Baptist, we are called to be faithful, not because it is easy, but because it is right.

Perhaps today's Gospel invites us to ask ourselves: Am I more concerned about pleasing God or pleasing people? We often remain silent because we fear criticism, rejection, or losing the approval of others. But John reminds us that our first loyalty must always be to the Lord. When we choose truth with love, God gives us the strength we need. May we ask for the courage to be faithful witnesses of Christ, not only in the great moments of life, but also in the ordinary decisions we make each day.
