MATTHEW 8: 1-4 LORD, IF YOU WISH, YOU CAN MAKE ME CLEAN
Year A, Friday of the 12th Week in Ordinary Time
In today's Gospel, a leper approaches Jesus with remarkable faith. He does not question Jesus' power; he only says, "Lord, if You wish, You can make me clean." These simple words reveal complete trust. The leper believes that Jesus has the power to heal him and humbly places himself in the Lord's hands.
In the time of Jesus, lepers suffered not only from a terrible disease but also from rejection and isolation. They were considered unclean and forced to live apart from their families and communities. Yet instead of avoiding the leper, Jesus does something extraordinary—He stretches out His hand and touches him. With that touch, Jesus restores not only the man's health but also his dignity, his relationships, and his place in the community.
The compassion of Jesus reminds us that God never turns away from those who come to Him with sincere hearts. There are many forms of "leprosy" today: sin, loneliness, fear, addiction, resentment, and discouragement. These wounds can isolate us just as surely as physical illness. Jesus invites us to bring them to Him with the same confidence as the leper.
The words of the leper can become our own daily prayer: "Lord, if You wish, You can make me clean." Whether we seek healing of body, mind, or soul, Jesus is always ready to touch us with His mercy, especially through the Sacraments, above all in Reconciliation and the Holy Eucharist. Today, let us approach Him with humility and faith, trusting that His healing love is greater than every wound we carry.
With Love and Prayers
