MATTHEW 13:18-23 WHAT KIND OF SOIL AM I?

Year A, Friday of the 16th Week in Ordinary Time

In today's Gospel, Jesus explains the Parable of the Sower. The seed is always good because it is the Word of God. The difference is not in the seed, but in the soil that receives it. The real question is not whether God is speaking, but whether our hearts are ready to receive what He is saying.

Jesus describes four kinds of soil. Sometimes our hearts are like the path—closed and distracted. Sometimes they are rocky—full of enthusiasm at first, but lacking perseverance. At other times they are filled with thorns, where worries, material concerns, and the busyness of life slowly choke God's Word. But Jesus also speaks of good soil—a heart that listens, welcomes His Word, and allows it to bear fruit.

The beautiful thing is that our hearts are not permanently one kind of soil. Every day we have the opportunity to become more open to God. Through prayer, the Eucharist, Confession, and acts of charity, God softens the hardened places within us and removes the stones and thorns that keep us from growing.

Perhaps today's Gospel invites us to ask ourselves: What kind of soil is my heart today? Is there something preventing God's Word from taking root—an unforgiving heart, a constant distraction, excessive worry, or attachment to something that draws me away from Him? The Lord continues to sow His Word generously. May we ask for the grace to become rich soil where His love can grow and bear abundant fruit for others.
