LUKE 2:41-51 A HEART FORMED BY THE HEART OF JESUS
Year A, Saturday of the 10th Week in Ordinary Time
Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Yesterday we celebrated the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Today the Church invites us to celebrate the Immaculate Heart of Mary. These two feasts belong together because no human heart was more closely united to the Heart of Jesus than Mary's.
The Gospel tells us that Mary "kept all these things in her heart." Throughout her life, Mary listened, reflected, trusted, and remained faithful, even when she did not fully understand God's plan. That is what made her heart so beautiful.
Mary was not spared the struggles of life. She knew uncertainty when the angel announced God's plan. She knew hardship when she fled to Egypt. She knew anxiety when Jesus was lost in the Temple. She knew sorrow as she stood beneath the Cross and watched her Son suffer and die. Yet through it all, she remained faithful.
Most of us can relate to Mary's journey. We all face moments when life does not unfold as we expected. We carry worries about our families, our health, our future, and those we love. Sometimes we pray and wonder why answers do not come quickly. Sometimes we struggle to understand what God is doing. Mary teaches us that faith is not having all the answers. Faith is trusting God even when the path ahead is unclear.
The Immaculate Heart of Mary is often pictured pierced by a sword. That image reminds us that love always carries a cost. The deeper we love, the more vulnerable we become to pain. Yet Mary's heart never became bitter. It remained open to God and open to others. That is because her heart was formed by the Heart of Jesus.
As we conclude this week in which our nation has been consecrated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Mary shows us how to respond. She teaches us to listen, to trust, to persevere, and to love faithfully. If we want our hearts to become more like the Heart of Christ, we could not ask for a better guide than His mother.
Today let us place our families, our parish, our nation, and ourselves under Mary's loving care, asking her to lead us ever closer to her Son. For the heart that stays close to Mary will always find its way to Jesus.
Question to ponder today: What part of my life do I need to place into Mary's hands so that she can help me trust Jesus more completely?
With Love and Prayers
