MATTHEW 13:54-58 DON'T LET FAMILIARITY WEAKEN YOUR FAITH
Year A, Friday of the 17th Week in Ordinary Time
In today's Gospel, Jesus returns to His hometown of Nazareth. The people are amazed by His wisdom and His mighty deeds, yet instead of believing in Him, they reject Him because they think they already know Him. "Is He not the carpenter's son?" they ask. Their familiarity with Jesus prevents them from recognizing who He truly is. As a result, Matthew tells us that Jesus "did not work many mighty deeds there because of their lack of faith."
The same danger exists in our own spiritual lives. We hear the Gospel every week, receive the Eucharist regularly, say familiar prayers, and celebrate the same liturgical seasons year after year. All of these are great blessings. But if we are not careful, what is sacred can become routine. We can go through the motions without allowing Christ to surprise us, challenge us, or transform us. Familiarity should deepen our love for the Lord, not diminish our wonder before Him.
Perhaps today's Gospel invites us to ask ourselves: Has my relationship with Jesus become routine, or do I still approach Him with faith and expectation? Every Mass is a new encounter with Christ. Every reading of the Gospel is another opportunity to hear Him speak. Every day He wants to do something new in our hearts—but only if we are open to Him. Let us ask the Lord for the grace never to take His presence for granted, but to meet Him each day with the faith, wonder, and trust of a disciple who is seeing Him for the very first time.
