Luke 2:16–21 MARY, MOTHER OF PEACE

Year A, — Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God (New Year’s Day)

On this first day of the new year, the Church places before us Mary, the Holy Mother of God. In today’s Gospel, we see the shepherds hastening to Bethlehem, finding Mary, Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. While the shepherds speak with joy about what they have seen and heard, Mary remains quietly attentive, treasuring all these things and pondering them in her heart.

Mary teaches us how to begin a new year—not with haste or anxiety, but with trust and reflection. She receives God’s work with humility and faith, allowing His presence to shape her heart. As Jesus is named and welcomed into the world, Mary stands at the center of this mystery, reminding us that God’s peace enters our lives when we make room for Him.

As we step into a new year, we are invited to follow Mary’s example: to treasure God’s blessings, to ponder His presence in our lives, and to entrust the days ahead to Him. Under Mary’s loving care, may we walk forward in hope, guided by the Prince of Peace.

Question to Ponder: As this new year begins, what moments of God’s presence am I being invited to treasure and ponder more deeply in my heart?
