Mark 6:45–52 Take Courage, It Is I

Year A, Wednesday after the Epiphany

In today’s Gospel, the disciples find themselves struggling against strong winds as they cross the sea. Jesus is not in the boat with them, yet He sees them straining at the oars. In the darkness and fear of the night, Jesus comes toward them, walking on the water, and says, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.”

The disciples are terrified, not because Jesus is absent, but because they do not recognize Him. Their hearts are still hardened, and they do not yet understand the deeper meaning of who Jesus is. Yet the moment He enters the boat, the wind dies down. His presence brings calm where there was chaos.

During this Epiphany season, Christ continues to reveal Himself—not only in moments of peace, but also in the storms of life. This Gospel reassures us that even when we feel alone, Jesus sees our struggles and comes toward us. He invites us to trust His presence and to move from fear to faith.

Question to Ponder: In what storms of my life is Christ inviting me to hear His voice and trust that He is near?
