MARK 6:34–44 GIVEN IN COMPASSION
Year A, Tuesday after the Epiphany
In today’s Gospel, Jesus looks upon the large crowd and is moved with compassion, for they were like sheep without a shepherd. Before He feeds them, Jesus teaches them. He nourishes both their hearts and their hunger, revealing a God who sees, cares, and responds.
When evening comes, the disciples focus on what is lacking: the time, the money, the food. Jesus, however, invites them into the miracle. “Give them some food yourselves,” He says. With only five loaves and two fish, Jesus blesses, breaks, and gives—transforming scarcity into abundance. In His hands, what seems insufficient becomes more than enough.
In the days after Epiphany, this Gospel reminds us that Christ continues to reveal Himself through compassion and generosity. The light shown to the nations now feeds the hungry and strengthens the weary. Jesus also calls us to participate—to offer what little we have, trusting that God can use it to bring life to others.
Question to Ponder: What small gift or act of compassion is Christ asking me to place in His hands for the good of others?
