Mark 6:1–6 THE CHALLENGE OF UNBELIEF

Year A, Wednesday of the Fourth Week in Ordinary Time

In today’s Gospel, Jesus returns to His hometown and teaches in the synagogue. The people who know Him best struggle to accept Him. They focus on His familiarity rather than His message, and their disbelief prevents them from receiving the fullness of what He offers.

Jesus is amazed not by their questions, but by their lack of faith. Their hearts are closed, not because of ignorance, but because of familiarity and preconceived ideas. When we think we already know who Jesus is, we may fail to recognize how He is working in our lives today.

This Gospel gently invites us to examine our openness to God. Faith requires humility—the willingness to listen, to trust, and to allow God to act beyond our expectations. When faith is present, grace flows freely; when it is absent, even miracles can be missed.

Question to Ponder: Are there ways in which familiarity or doubt prevents me from recognizing God’s work in my life?
