John 3:22–30 HE MUST INCREASE
Year A, Saturday after the Epiphany
In today’s Gospel, we hear the words of John the Baptist as his public ministry begins to fade and the ministry of Jesus comes to the forefront. Some of John’s disciples are troubled that more people are now going to Jesus. John responds with deep clarity and humility: “He must increase; I must decrease.”
John understands his role. He is not the bridegroom, but the friend who rejoices when the bridegroom arrives. His joy is complete not when he is noticed, but when Christ is known. In this moment, John reveals a heart fully surrendered to God’s plan.
As the Epiphany season draws to a close, this Gospel invites us to reflect on our own discipleship. Following Christ often means letting go of control, recognition, and self-importance. True joy comes when we allow Christ to take the center of our lives. Like John the Baptist, we are called to rejoice not in ourselves, but in the presence of the Lord who comes to save.
Question to Ponder: What might I need to let go of so that Christ can take a greater place in my life?
