Mark 6:14–29 THE COST OF TRUTH

Year A, Friday of the Fourth Week in Ordinary Time

In today’s Gospel, we hear the tragic account of the death of John the Baptist. John’s courage in speaking the truth leads not to honor, but to imprisonment and death. Herod, though intrigued by John, is unable to act with integrity because he is trapped by fear, pride, and the expectations of others.

John the Baptist reminds us that faithfulness to God sometimes comes at a cost. Speaking truth, standing for justice, and living with integrity are not always rewarded by the world. Yet John remains faithful to his mission until the end, trusting God rather than human approval.

This Gospel challenges us to examine our own courage. There are moments when silence feels safer than truth, when compromise seems easier than faithfulness. John’s witness invites us to choose integrity, even when it is difficult, and to trust that God’s truth ultimately leads to life.

Question to Ponder: Am I willing to remain faithful to God’s truth, even when it requires courage or sacrifice?
