MARK 1:29–39 HEALING, PRAYER, AND MISSION

Year A, Wednesday of the First Week in Ordinary Time

In today’s Gospel, we see Jesus moving quickly from place to place—healing the sick, driving out demons, and responding to the needs of the people. He heals Simon’s mother-in-law, and immediately she rises and serves. Her response shows us that healing is not an end in itself; it leads to service and new life.

Amid all this activity, Jesus withdraws early in the morning to a deserted place to pray. His strength and direction flow from this quiet communion with the Father. When the disciples find Him and urge Him to stay, Jesus reminds them that His mission is broader: He must go on to other villages to proclaim the Good News.

This Gospel teaches us the rhythm of discipleship—receiving God’s healing, making time for prayer, and being sent on mission. Like Jesus, we are invited to balance action with prayer, allowing our service to flow from our relationship with God.

Question to Ponder: How am I balancing prayer, service, and mission in my daily life?
