MATTHEW 10:17–22 COURAGE THAT WITNESSES
Feast of St. Stephen, the First Martyr
In today’s Gospel, Jesus speaks to His disciples about the challenges they will face while proclaiming the Good News. He warns them that they may encounter opposition, betrayal, and persecution—but He also assures them that they will receive guidance and strength from the Holy Spirit.
St. Stephen, the first Christian martyr, lived this reality. He spoke the truth with courage, even in the face of hostility. His faith was not passive; it was active, bold, and unwavering. Stephen’s witness reminds us that following Christ sometimes involves difficulty, but it also brings profound peace and eternal reward.
Jesus teaches that we are never alone when we face challenges for the sake of faith. The Spirit equips and sustains us, giving the words, wisdom, and courage we need. Like Stephen, we are called to witness through both our actions and our words—remaining faithful, even when it is hard, trusting that God’s grace can transform fear into strength.
As we celebrate St. Stephen, let us reflect on how courage rooted in faith can bear witness to God’s love in our own lives. True witness is not just heroic acts—it is the daily commitment to live faithfully, speak honestly, and act justly, even in small, quiet ways.
Question to Ponder: Where is God calling me to be courageous in speaking or living my faith, even when it may be challenging?
