MARK 1:40–45 TOUCHED BY MERCY

Year A Thursday of the First Week in Ordinary Time

In today’s Gospel, a man afflicted with leprosy approaches Jesus with humility and hope: “If You wish, You can make me clean.” Jesus is moved with compassion. He stretches out His hand, touches the man, and says, “I do will it. Be made clean.” Immediately, the man is healed.

What stands out is not only the miraculous healing but also the personal encounter. Jesus does not keep a distance; He draws near and touches the man, breaking through fear, isolation, and social barriers. This act of mercy restores not just his health but his dignity and place in the community.

For us, this Gospel is a reminder that Christ continues to bring mercy and healing today. Sometimes it comes in extraordinary ways, but often it is in small gestures of care, attention, or forgiveness. Like the leper, we are invited to bring our needs to Jesus with faith, trusting in His desire to make us whole.

Question to Ponder: In what areas of my life or relationships do I need to bring myself humbly to Christ for healing and mercy?
