MATTHEW 4:12–17, 23–25 A GREAT LIGHT HAS DAWNED
Year A, Monday after the Epiphany
In today’s Gospel, we see the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry. Matthew tells us
that Jesus goes to Galilee, a place often overlooked and considered distant from
religious importance. Yet it is precisely there that the prophecy is fulfilled: “The
people who sit in darkness have seen a great light.” God’s saving work begins not in
places of power, but where people most long for hope.
Jesus’ message is simple and urgent: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at
hand.” To repent is not merely to feel sorrow for sin, but to turn toward the light that
has come into the world. Jesus then moves among the people, teaching, proclaiming
the Good News, and healing every kind of illness. His presence brings healing and
restoration.
In the days after Epiphany, this Gospel reminds us that Christ’s light continues to
spread. The light revealed to the Magi now reaches ordinary towns and ordinary
lives. As followers of Christ, we are called not only to receive this light, but to walk in
it and reflect it to others through compassion, repentance, and trust.
Question to Ponder: What areas of my life is Christ inviting out of darkness and into
the light of His healing presence?
