JOHN 13:16–20 SMALL ACTS, REAL DISCIPLESHIP

Year A, Thursday of the Fourth Week of Easter

In today’s Gospel, Jesus reminds His disciples: “No servant is greater than his master.” He

says this right after washing their feet.

That is important. Jesus is not just giving a teaching—He is showing a way of life.

In our daily life, we often look for recognition. We want our efforts to be noticed, our work to

be appreciated. And when it is not, we feel hurt or discouraged.

But Jesus quietly changes the focus. He invites us to serve—not for attention, not for

reward, but out of love. The small things matter: helping at home, being patient with

someone difficult, doing our work honestly, listening when someone needs us. These are

not big, dramatic actions—but they are real discipleship.

Jesus also says, “Blessed are you if you do this.” Not just if you understand it, but if you live

it. And that is the challenge. It is easier to admire Jesus than to follow Him in these simple,

humble ways.

But when we do, something changes within us. We begin to reflect Him, quietly and deeply.

Question to ponder today:

In the small, ordinary moments of my day, am I willing to serve like Jesus—even when no

one notices?
