MATTHEW 5:1–12 THE HEART OF JESUS AND THE PATH TO TRUE HAPPINESS

Year A, Monday of the 10th Week in Ordinary Time

Today we begin hearing the Beatitudes, perhaps the most beautiful description of the Heart of Jesus. As we prepare for the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart and our nation's consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Gospel invites us to look closely at what fills the heart of Christ.

The world tells us that happiness comes from success, wealth, comfort, popularity, and power. Jesus speaks of something very different. He calls blessed the poor in spirit, the merciful, the peacemakers, those who hunger for righteousness, and those who remain faithful even when life is difficult.

Why? Because these are the qualities found in His own Heart.

The Sacred Heart is not merely a symbol of Jesus' love; it reveals the way He lived. His Heart was humble, compassionate, merciful, and completely open to the Father's will. The Beatitudes are not simply rules to follow; they are a portrait of Jesus Himself.

And that challenges us. Most of us spend a great deal of energy trying to avoid suffering, disappointment, and sacrifice. Yet Jesus teaches that true happiness is not found in getting everything we want but in becoming the kind of people God created us to be.

We see this every day. The happiest people are often not the richest or most successful. They are often those who know how to love, forgive, serve, and trust God even in difficult circumstances.

As our nation prepares to be consecrated to the Sacred Heart, perhaps the first question is not what we want from Jesus, but whether our hearts are becoming more like His. And the Beatitudes show us the path.

Question to ponder today: Which Beatitude do I find most difficult to live, and what does that reveal about the areas of my heart that still need to become more like the Heart of Jesus?
