MATTHEW 5:20–26 THE HEART THAT RECONCILES

Year A, Thursday of the 10th Week in Ordinary Time

As we come to the eve of the consecration of our nation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and prepare for tomorrow's Solemnity, today's Gospel takes us directly into the Heart of Christ.

Today Jesus tells us that righteousness is not merely about avoiding wrongdoing. It goes much deeper. He speaks about anger, resentment, and broken relationships. Then He says something remarkable: if you are bringing your gift to the altar and remember that someone has something against you, first go and be reconciled.

Why is reconciliation so important to Jesus? Because it reflects His own Heart. The Sacred Heart of Jesus is a heart that constantly reaches out to heal, forgive, and restore. Throughout the Gospel, we see Jesus crossing barriers, welcoming sinners, forgiving those who failed Him, and even praying for those who crucified Him. His Heart never stops seeking reconciliation.

Most of us know how difficult that can be. We all carry wounds. Some come from misunderstandings. Some from harsh words. Some from disappointments that happened years ago. Sometimes we hold onto hurt because letting go feels impossible.

Yet we also know what resentment can do. It quietly steals our peace, hardens our hearts, and keeps old wounds alive. Jesus does not ask us to pretend that pain never happened. Nor does He say that reconciliation is always easy. But He invites us to take the first step. Sometimes that step is a conversation. Sometimes it is an apology. Sometimes it is simply praying for the grace to forgive.

As our nation prepares to be consecrated to the Sacred Heart, perhaps this Gospel invites us to examine our own hearts. The Heart of Jesus is open, merciful, and forgiving. The closer we come to His Heart, the more we learn to let go of anger and make room for peace. For it is difficult to ask Jesus to reign in our hearts while holding tightly to resentment.

Question to ponder today: Is there a person, a wound, or a relationship that I need to place into the healing and reconciling Heart of Jesus today?

With Love and Prayers
