MATTHEW 19:3-12 FAITHFUL LOVE REFLECTS GOD'S LOVE

Year A, Friday of the 19th Week in Ordinary Time - Memorial of Saint Maximilian Kolbe

In today's Gospel, the Pharisees question Jesus about marriage and divorce. Instead of entering into a legal debate, Jesus takes them back to God's original plan: a love that is faithful, permanent, and life-giving. Marriage is not simply a contract between two people but a sacred covenant that reflects God's own faithful love. At the same time, Jesus reminds us that every Christian vocation—whether marriage, priesthood, or religious life—is a call to give ourselves completely to God and to others.

The life of Saint Maximilian Kolbe is a beautiful example of this total self-giving. As a Conventual Franciscan, he dedicated his life to Christ through his love for the Blessed Virgin Mary and his tireless missionary work. In the darkness of Auschwitz, his fidelity reached its highest expression when he freely offered his life in place of another prisoner, a husband and father. Saint Maximilian showed that authentic love is measured not by words but by sacrifice. His life reflected the very love that Jesus speaks about in today's Gospel—a love that remains faithful, even when it costs everything.

Perhaps today's Gospel invites us to ask ourselves: How faithful am I to the commitments God has entrusted to me? Whether we are married, single, ordained, or consecrated, every vocation requires daily acts of love, patience, forgiveness, and sacrifice. Faithfulness is built one day at a time through countless small choices to love as Christ loves. May Saint Maximilian Kolbe inspire us to remain faithful to our promises, generous in our service, and courageous in our love. For in the end, the greatest witness we can give is a life that is completely offered to God and to one another.
