Mark 8:11–13 SEEKING SIGNS OR SEEKING FAITH?

Year A, Monday of the Sixth Week in Ordinary Time

In today’s Gospel, the Pharisees ask Jesus for a sign from heaven. They want proof—something extraordinary that will convince them to believe. Yet Jesus sighs deeply and refuses their request.

Why does Jesus respond this way? It is not because He cannot perform signs. He has already healed the sick, fed the hungry, and shown God’s power through many miracles. The problem is not the lack of signs, but the lack of openness in their hearts. They are looking for proof without faith rather than allowing faith to help them recognize God already present among them.

Sometimes we may act in the same way. We ask God for clear signs before trusting Him—wanting certainty before commitment. Yet God often speaks through ordinary moments: daily blessings, quiet answers to prayer, acts of kindness, and the presence of people who walk with us.

Faith grows not by demanding signs, but by recognizing God already at work in our lives.

Question to Ponder: Am I waiting for extraordinary signs from God, or am I learning to recognize His presence in ordinary moments?
