MATTHEW 12:1-8 WHAT GOD REALLY DESIRES

Year A, Friday of the 15th Week in Ordinary Time

In today's Gospel, Jesus and His disciples are walking through a field, and the disciples begin to pick grain because they are hungry. The Pharisees immediately criticize them for breaking the law of the Sabbath. But Jesus responds by reminding them that mercy is at the heart of God's law.

This Gospel is really about how easy it is to become more focused on rules than on people. The Pharisees were sincere in their desire to protect the Law of God, but in the process, they forgot that the Law exists to serve life, not to burden it. Jesus reminds them: "I desire mercy, not sacrifice."

We can fall into the same attitude today. Sometimes we are quick to judge, quick to criticize, and slow to understand. We may follow religious practices faithfully, but forget kindness, patience, and compassion in our daily interactions. Yet Jesus is clear: God is not pleased by empty external observance if the heart is lacking love.

Perhaps today's Gospel invites us to ask ourselves: Do I put people first, or do I put rules, opinions, and judgments first? Faith is not only about what we avoid doing; it is about how we love. Every law of God ultimately leads us to greater love of God and neighbor.

Jesus, the Lord of the Sabbath, reminds us that true holiness is always marked by mercy. When our hearts become merciful like His, then we begin to understand what God truly desires from us.
