Matthew 21:33–43 RESPONDING TO GOD’S INVITATION
Year A, Friday of the Second Week of Lent
In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells the Parable of the Tenants. A landowner plants a vineyard and entrusts it to tenants. When he sends his servants to collect the fruit, they are mistreated, and finally, his son is killed. The landowner’s vineyard is then given to others who will produce fruit.
This parable challenges us to reflect on how we respond to God’s invitation. God has entrusted each of us with gifts — life, talents, opportunities, relationships, and faith itself. Like the tenants, we can choose to nurture these gifts and bear fruit, or we can ignore them, resist responsibility, or misuse them.
Lent invites us to examine our hearts. Are there areas where we have ignored God’s call, delayed action, or failed to use our gifts for the good of others? The vineyard is not just the landowner’s property — it symbolizes our life, our time, and the relationships God has placed before us.
Jesus warns that God desires fruitfulness, not mere possession. He calls us to respond with generosity, gratitude, and faithful action. Every small act of love, kindness, or justice contributes to the harvest of God’s kingdom. Lent is a time to remove what hinders growth — selfishness, neglect, or apathy — and to cultivate a life that bears abundant fruit for God and neighbor.
Question to Ponder: How am I using the “vineyard” God has entrusted to me, and what fruit am I cultivating in my life this Lent?
