JOHN 6:44–51 DRAWN BY THE FATHER, FED BY THE SON
Year A, Thursday of the Third Week of Easter
In today’s Gospel, Jesus says something very profound: “No one can come to me unless
the Father draws him.” In simple words, our journey of faith is not just our effort—it is God
gently drawing us closer.
This is comforting, because many times we think faith depends only on us. We try harder,
pray more, correct ourselves—but we still feel weak. Today Jesus reminds us: you are
already being drawn. Even your desire for God is a sign that He is at work in you.
Then Jesus says something even more powerful: “I am the living bread… whoever eats this
bread will live forever.” He is not pointing to an idea or a philosophy. He is pointing to
Himself. God does not just send help from a distance—He gives His very life to us.
And yet, we struggle to believe this fully. We still look for life in many other
places—success, comfort, control, relationships—hoping they will finally satisfy us. But
deep down, we know they don’t last.
Jesus does not condemn that hunger. He redirects it. “Come to me,” He says. Because
only He can feed what is deepest in us.
Faith, then, is not only about choosing God—it is also about realizing we are already being
drawn by Him, even in our confusion, even in our weakness.
And when we come to Him, we are not just strengthened—we are changed from within.
Question to ponder today: Do I believe that God is already drawing me closer to
Him—even in my struggles and doubts?
