Luke 15:1–3, 11–32 THE MERCY THAT WAITS

Year A, Saturday of the Second Week of Lent

Today, Jesus shares the story of the Prodigal Son — a story of mercy, forgiveness, and the joy of being welcomed home.

The younger son asks for his inheritance early, squanders it, and ends up in poverty and despair. Yet when he returns, expecting

rejection, his father runs to embrace him, restoring him fully without hesitation.

This Gospel is a profound Lenten invitation. How often do we feel unworthy of God’s mercy because of our failures, sins, or bad choices?

We may hide from Him, thinking we are too far gone. Yet Lent reminds us that God is always waiting, ready to forgive,

to welcome, and to restore us. His love is patient, persistent, and unconditional.

Notice also the older son, who struggles with resentment and judgment. Lent calls not only for personal conversion but

also for transforming our hearts toward others.  We are invited to rejoice in the mercy God shows to all, to let go of envy or

bitterness, and to extend forgiveness as freely as we receive it.

The path of Lent is both humble and joyful. It leads us to admit our weaknesses, turn back to God, and celebrate the new life He offers.

Every small step of repentance, every act of reconciliation, and every embrace of mercy prepares our hearts for Easter’s joy.

Question to Ponder: Where in my life do I need to return to God’s mercy, and how can I also rejoice in the mercy shown to others?
