Matthew 5:17–19 FAITHFUL IN THE LITTLE THINGS
Year A, Wednesday of the Third Week of Lent
In today’s Gospel, Jesus says something very important: “I have come not to abolish the law, but to fulfill it.” At first, this may sound like a discussion about religious rules, but Jesus is pointing to something much deeper.
For the people of His time, the law was meant to guide their relationship with God and with one another. But over time, some began to focus only on the external rules while forgetting the spirit behind them — love, justice, mercy, and faithfulness.
Jesus reminds us that true faith is not simply about following rules outwardly. It is about allowing God’s word to shape our hearts and guide our daily lives.
Sometimes we think holiness requires extraordinary actions. But very often, holiness grows through small acts of faithfulness: being patient when we feel irritated, speaking kindly when we could respond harshly, keeping our promises, helping someone quietly without expecting recognition. These small choices may seem insignificant, but they slowly shape who we become. They form a life rooted in love and integrity.
Lent invites us to look at the little things in our lives — the daily habits, the words we speak, the attitudes we carry. When we allow God’s love to guide even the smallest actions, our lives begin to reflect Christ more clearly.
Remember, Holiness is not built in one dramatic moment. It grows day by day, choice by choice, through faithful hearts that try again and again to live the Gospel.
Question to Ponder: What small change in my daily habits could help me live the Gospel more faithfully this Lent?
