LUKE 7:31–35 WHEN WE HAVE ALREADY MADE UP OUR MINDS

Wednesday of the 24th Week in Ordinary Time – Year A

Jesus compares the people of his generation to children sitting in the marketplace, complaining that no matter what happens, they are not satisfied. John the Baptist came fasting, and they said, “He is possessed by a demon.” Jesus came eating and drinking, and they called Him “a glutton and a friend of sinners.” The problem was not John. The problem was not Jesus. The problem was that they had already made up their minds.

Sometimes we can do the same thing. We can become so fixed in our expectations that we no longer recognize what God is doing. We may say, “That is not the way I expected it,” or “That person could never change,” or “God would never work through someone like that.” And before we know it, we are not really listening anymore. We are simply looking for reasons to reject what we do not want to hear. Faith requires something more—a heart that is willing to be surprised by God.

So today, Jesus quietly asks us: Am I truly open to God, or have I already decided how God must work in my life? Perhaps the Lord is speaking through a person we have judged, a situation we did not choose, or a word we do not particularly want to hear. Let us ask for the grace of a teachable heart—a heart humble enough to say, “Lord, show me what You are doing.” Because when our hearts are open, we begin to recognize that God is often working in ways we never expected.
