LUKE 7:36–50 WHEN MERCY CHANGES THE HEART

Thursday of the 24th Week in Ordinary Time – Year A

Simon the Pharisee invites Jesus to his home, but it is the woman who comes with the greatest love. She stands behind Jesus, weeps at His feet, wipes them with her hair, kisses them, and anoints them with oil. Simon sees only her past: “She is a sinner.” Jesus sees something different. He sees a heart that has experienced mercy. And Jesus reminds Simon that the one who knows how much he has been forgiven is often the one who loves the most.

There is something very human in Simon. We can sometimes notice another person’s faults more easily than our own. We remember what someone did years ago, the mistake they made, the way they disappointed us—and we quietly put them into a category: “That is the kind of person they are.” But Jesus invites us to look again. Every person has a story, and every person needs mercy. We are all standing before God not because we are perfect, but because we have been forgiven.

So perhaps the question for us today is: Do I remember how much mercy God has shown me? When we forget our own need for mercy, we can become judgmental. But when we remember how patiently God has treated us, our hearts become more compassionate toward others. The woman leaves Jesus with peace because she knows she has been forgiven. May we come before Jesus with the same humility, grateful for His mercy—and may the mercy we receive from Him become the mercy we offer to others.
