LUKE 8:4–15 WHAT KIND OF SOIL IS MY HEART?
Saturday of the 24th Week in Ordinary Time – Year A
Jesus tells us the parable of the sower. The seed is the Word of God, and the seed is good. The difference is the soil in which it falls. Some seed is lost on the path, some withers on rocky ground, some is choked by thorns, but some falls on rich soil and produces an abundant harvest. Jesus is reminding us that God never stops sowing His Word; the real question is whether we are ready to receive it.
Our hearts can become like any of those four kinds of soil. Sometimes God's Word lands on a busy heart, and we hear it but quickly forget it. Sometimes we are enthusiastic for a moment, but when difficulties come, our faith disappears. Sometimes worries, possessions, distractions, and the demands of daily life become the thorns that slowly crowd God out. But there are also moments when we truly listen, hold on to God's Word, and allow it to change the way we live.
So today, Jesus asks us a simple but important question: What kind of soil is my heart right now? We don't have to be perfect soil. We simply need to let God work on us. A hard heart can be softened. Rocky ground can be cleared. Thorns can be pulled out. Every morning, God gives us another opportunity to receive His Word. Let us listen with an open heart, hold on to what He says, and patiently allow His Word to bear fruit in our lives.
