Matthew 11:11–15 A Love That Awakens Our Hearts
Year A, Thursday of the 2nd Week of Advent
In today’s Gospel, Jesus speaks with great admiration about John the Baptist, calling him the greatest born of women and the one sent to prepare the way of the Lord. As we continue our Advent journey focused on Love, Jesus invites us to recognize how love awakens our hearts, stirs our spirits, and calls us to deeper conversion. John the Baptist lived with clarity, courage, and purpose—not because he was powerful by worldly standards, but because he was completely rooted in the love and mission of God. Last week, Hope urged us to cry, “Maranatha—come, Lord Jesus,” and this week Love shows us how to prepare the way for His coming with sincerity and strength.
Jesus tells us that the Kingdom of heaven “suffers violence,” meaning it requires a certain holy intensity, a spiritual readiness, a willingness to let God’s love challenge us and change us. True love does not leave us where we are; it calls us forward. Advent Love urges us to awaken, to remove the obstacles in our hearts, and to return to what matters most. Perhaps there is a place in our life where faith has grown quiet, or a habit that pulls our attention away from God, or simply a lack of spiritual energy that leaves us drifting. John the Baptist reminds us that God’s love is not only comforting—it is also strengthening. It gives us the courage to turn back to God, to choose what is good, and to welcome Christ with renewed devotion.
As we near the midpoint of Advent, may the example of John the Baptist inspire us to prepare the way of the Lord with renewed love. Let us allow God’s voice to awaken our hearts, sharpen our purpose, and guide us to live with the same passion and faithfulness that marked John’s life.
Question to Ponder: What area of my heart needs to “wake up” so that I can welcome Jesus with greater love and readiness this Advent?
