MARK 2:23-28 NEW WINE, NEW HEARTS

Year A, Tuesday of the 2nd Week in Ordinary Time

In today’s Gospel, Jesus and His disciples are criticized for picking grain on the Sabbath. What appears to be a small action becomes a deeper teaching. Jesus reminds them that the Sabbath was made for humanity, not humanity for the Sabbath.

With these words, Jesus reveals the heart of God. God’s laws are not meant to burden us, but to give life, freedom, and rest. When rules are separated from love and mercy, they lose their purpose. Jesus shows us that compassion is never a violation of God’s will.

By declaring Himself “Lord of the Sabbath,” Jesus invites us to see that true rest is found in Him. The Sabbath is not simply about stopping work; it is about restoring our relationship with God and one another. In Christ, we find rest for our hearts, healing for our wounds, and freedom to live with mercy.

Question to Ponder: Do I allow my faith to become a burden, or do I let Jesus lead me to a faith rooted in love, mercy, and true rest?
