MARK 2:13–17 COME, FOLLOW ME
Year A Saturday of the First Week in Ordinary Time
In today’s Gospel, we see Jesus calling Levi, a tax collector, to follow Him. Levi immediately responds, leaving his former life behind, and hosts a banquet to welcome Jesus. This encounter surprises many, for tax collectors were often seen as sinners and outcasts. Yet Jesus’ mission is clear: He comes not for the righteous, but for those who recognize their need for mercy.
Jesus’ words, “I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners,” reveal God’s heart. He seeks out the lost, the marginalized, and those weighed down by life’s burdens. And He calls us, too—not because of who we are, but because of who He is. Following Jesus is not about perfection, but about openness to God’s grace and the courage to start anew.
This Gospel invites us to examine our own lives. Where do we need to hear Jesus’ call? Are there areas where we cling to old ways, afraid to leave them behind? Jesus meets us with mercy and invites us to walk with Him, offering life, hope, and transformation.
Question to Ponder: What is Jesus inviting me to leave behind today so that I can follow Him more faithfully?
