RETURN WITH ALL YOUR HEART
Year A, Ash Wednesday — Matthew 6:1–6, 16–18 | Joel 2:12–18
Today we begin Lent not with celebration, but with ashes. Ashes placed quietly on our foreheads — simple, fragile dust. They remind us of something we often try to avoid in daily life: we are not in control of everything. We are human, limited, and in need of God.
Many of us come to Ash Wednesday carrying invisible burdens. Some carry stress from work or financial worries. Some carry family tensions, disappointments, loneliness, or grief. Others struggle silently with habits they cannot break, fears about the future, or a deep tiredness of heart. Outwardly life may look normal, but inwardly there can be restlessness and heaviness.
Into this reality, the prophet Joel speaks with urgency: “Return to me with all your heart.” Not with perfection. Not when life is finally organized. Not when we feel spiritually strong. God calls us to return now, exactly as we are.
Prophet Joel says something very important: “Rend your hearts, not your garments.” In biblical times people tore their clothes as a sign of repentance. But God says He is not interested in outward drama; He desires an inner turning. Therefore, Lent is not about appearances — it is about honesty before God.
And this is exactly what Jesus teaches in today’s Gospel. He speaks about prayer, fasting, and almsgiving — the three traditional practices of Lent. But notice His repeated phrase: “Your Father who sees in secret.” Here, Jesus shifts our focus from public religion to personal relationship. Yes! “Your Father who sees in secret.” knows our struggles, our efforts, and even our smallest desire to change.
In daily life, we often live for appearances. We want to seem strong, successful, put together. Even spiritually, we can fall into the trap of doing things just to feel good about ourselves or to be noticed by others. But Jesus invites us into something quieter and deeper — a faith lived in the hidden places of the heart.
Prayer becomes the place where we stop pretending and speak honestly with God about our fears, frustrations, and hopes.
