John 11:45–56 WHEN FEAR MEETS FAITH
Year A, Saturday of the Fifth Week of Lent
In today’s Gospel, Jesus has just raised Lazarus from the dead. Many who witness this miracle come to believe in Him.
Yet, even in the face of this powerful sign, fear and self-interest rise among the leaders. They plot, they argue, and they worry more
about maintaining control than embracing the truth.
This passage shows a stark contrast: belief versus fear. Faith opens us to life; fear leads to division, plotting,
and ultimately harm. Even when God acts in ways that could transform hearts, human fear can blind us.
Lent calls us to examine our own hearts. Where is fear holding us back from fully trusting God? Are we hesitant to
forgive, slow to show love, or reluctant to follow Christ boldly? Like the people in the Gospel, we may recognize God’s work, yet
resist it because of doubt, pride, or fear of change.
But notice the response of those who believe. They are drawn to Jesus. They are ready to follow, even if it costs them.
Faith does not eliminate difficulty — it gives us the courage to face it, trusting that God is at work, even when the path is uncertain.
As we near the final days of Lent, Jesus invites us to choose belief over fear. He calls us to act with courage, compassion,
and hope, letting our faith guide our decisions and relationships. Our Lenten journey is not only about self-denial, but
about allowing God to transform fear into trust, hesitation into action, and doubt into belief.
Question to Ponder: Where is fear holding me back from fully trusting and following Christ, and how can I choose faith instead?
