John 7:40–53 THE COURAGE TO FOLLOW CHRIST

Year A, Saturday of the Fourth Week of Lent

In today’s Gospel, we see a crowd divided. Some say, “This is truly the Prophet,” while others reject Him. Even among the leaders,

there is confusion, hesitation, and fear of speaking openly. No one wants to take a firm stand for Jesus, worried about opposition,

scandal, or personal risk.

This scene challenges us in a very practical way. Following Christ is not always easy. There are times in life when standing for

what is right feels risky or uncomfortable. We may fear judgment, criticism, or rejection, even from those closest to us.

Yet Lent calls us to courage — the courage to choose Christ, even when it is inconvenient or unpopular. Courage does not mean

rushing into danger recklessly; it means being faithful in small and large ways, trusting that God is with us.

The divided crowd also reminds us to examine our hearts. Are we passive followers, swayed by opinion and fear? Or do we,

like the prophets and saints, seek the truth and follow it, even when it is challenging?

In our daily lives, courage might look like speaking kindly when everyone else is criticizing, choosing honesty over convenience,

or standing up for someone who cannot defend themselves. Lent invites us to act with integrity and to rely on God’s strength

when the path is difficult.

Jesus never forces anyone to follow Him. But He calls each of us to a personal response — to decide whether we will allow fear to control us, or faith.

Question to Ponder: In what area of my life is God asking me to follow Him courageously, even if it is uncomfortable or risky?
