MATTHEW 11: 28-30 COME TO ME AND FIND REST
Year A, Thursday of the 15th Week in Ordinary Time
In today's Gospel, Jesus speaks words that touch the deepest longing of the human heart: "Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest." He is not speaking to the strong or the self-sufficient, but to those who are tired—physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
Each of us carries burdens. Sometimes they are visible, like illness, work, or family responsibilities. Other times they are hidden—worries, regrets, guilt, or inner struggles that we do not easily share with others. Over time, these burdens can become heavy and wear us down.
Jesus does not promise that life will be without burdens. Instead, He offers us a different way of carrying them. He invites us to walk with Him, to learn from Him, and to let Him share the weight we carry. The "yoke" He speaks about is not a removal of responsibility, but a relationship with Him that makes what is heavy become lighter.
Perhaps today's Gospel invites us to ask ourselves: What burden am I carrying alone that Jesus is asking me to place in His hands? So often we try to manage everything by ourselves, until we reach the point of exhaustion. Jesus gently reminds us that we were never meant to carry life alone.
To come to Jesus is not only a one-time decision; it is a daily choice to surrender our worries, our fears, and our struggles to Him. In exchange, He gives us rest—not necessarily the absence of work, but the peace of knowing we are not alone. With Him, the burden becomes bearable, and the journey becomes filled with hope.
