MATTHEW 10:16-23 COURAGE IN THE MIDST OF CHALLENGES

Year A, Friday of the 14th Week in Ordinary Time

In today's Gospel, Jesus does not promise His disciples an easy life. Instead, He tells them that they will face opposition, misunderstanding, and even persecution because they belong to Him. But He also tells them not to be afraid, because the Holy Spirit will be with them and give them the words they need.

Most of us may never experience the kind of persecution the Apostles endured. Yet we all know what it is like to be challenged because of our faith. It may happen when we choose honesty over convenience, forgiveness over revenge, compassion over judgment, or when we stand up for what is right even if it is unpopular. Living the Gospel is not always easy.

Jesus compares His disciples to "sheep in the midst of wolves." Then He adds an important instruction: "Be shrewd as serpents and simple as doves." In other words, He asks us to be both wise and loving—to face the world with courage, but never with hatred; with conviction, but always with humility.

Perhaps the question for us today is this: When my faith is tested, how do I respond? Do I remain faithful, or do I stay silent because I am afraid of what others might think? Jesus never promised that following Him would be easy, but He did promise that we would never walk alone. The same Holy Spirit who strengthened the Apostles is with us today. Let us ask for the courage to remain faithful, whatever challenges come our way.
