MATTHEW 10:34–11:1 PUTTING CHRIST FIRST

Year A, Monday of the 15th Week in Ordinary Time

At first, today's Gospel may surprise us. Jesus says, "I have come not to bring peace but the sword." Yet we know that Jesus is the Prince of Peace. He is not encouraging conflict or division. Rather, He is reminding us that choosing to follow Him will sometimes require difficult decisions.

There are moments when our faith challenges us to go against the values of the world. Choosing honesty instead of dishonesty, forgiveness instead of resentment, or compassion instead of indifference may not always be popular. Even those closest to us may not understand the choices we make because of our faith.

Jesus asks us a very important question today: Who comes first in my life? Family, work, friendships, and responsibilities are all precious gifts from God. But none of them should take the place that belongs to God alone. When Christ is truly first, we become better spouses, parents, children, friends, and neighbors because His love shapes every relationship we have.

Perhaps today's Gospel invites us to examine our priorities. Is there something—or someone—that is taking the place that belongs to Christ in my heart? Following Jesus is not always the easiest path, but it is always the path that leads to lasting peace and true life. When we place Him first, everything else finds its proper place.
