Luke 24:13–35 HE WALKS WITH US
Year A, Wednesday of the Easter Octave
Two disciples are walking away from Jerusalem, leaving behind the place where their hopes seemed to have been shattered. They are discouraged, confused, and weighed down by everything that has happened. They had hoped Jesus was the one, but now they are unsure. As they walk, they talk about their disappointment, their questions, and their pain. This moment reflects something very real in our own lives. There are times when we too walk away—away from hope, away from clarity, even away from God—because life has not turned out the way we expected.
And yet, in that very moment, Jesus draws near and walks with them. They do not recognize Him. Their eyes are prevented from seeing who He is. But He listens to them. He allows them to speak their confusion and sorrow. Then gently, patiently, He begins to explain the Scriptures, helping them understand that suffering was not the end, but part of God’s greater plan. This is how God often works in our lives. He meets us where we are, even in our doubts, and slowly leads us toward understanding—not by force, but with patience and love.
As they continue walking, something begins to change within them. Later they will say, “Were not our hearts burning within us?” Even before they recognized Him, their hearts were already being touched. This is important for us to remember. Sometimes we may not clearly see God at work, but deep within, something is stirring—peace, hope, a quiet strength. That is often how Christ is present to us.
The turning point comes when they invite Him to stay with them. “Stay with us,” they say. And at the table, in the breaking of the bread, their eyes are opened. They finally recognize Him. In that moment, everything becomes clear. Their sorrow turns into joy, their confusion into faith, and their weariness into mission. They immediately return to Jerusalem—not because everything is easy now, but because they have encountered the Risen Lord.
This Gospel reminds us that Jesus walks with us in every moment of life—especially when we feel lost or discouraged. He speaks to us through His Word, He reveals Himself in the Eucharist, and He waits for our invitation to remain with us. The journey of faith is often a slow awakening, but when we allow Him to stay, our lives begin to change.
Food for Thought: In moments of confusion or disappointment, do I recognize that Jesus is walking with me, and do I invite Him to stay in my life?
