Matthew 7:21, 24-27 Building Our Hope on the Rock

Year A, Thursday of the 1st Week of Advent

In today’s Gospel, Jesus teaches us the importance of not just hearing His words, but putting them into action. He compares those who live according to His teaching to a wise person who builds a house on rock—strong, stable, and secure. As we journey through Advent, this is a call to ground our lives in Him, so that when challenges come, our hope remains unshaken. Maranatha—Come, Lord Jesus! reminds us that the strength we need to face life’s storms comes from living in His presence.

Advent is a season of preparation, not only to welcome Christ at Christmas but also to anchor our hearts in His wisdom. The rains, floods, and winds Jesus mentions are like the trials and uncertainties we face daily. When we base our life on God’s Word, our hope does not falter, even when circumstances feel overwhelming.

We are invited to examine: Where are we building our lives? On fleeting pleasures, on our own plans, or on the firm foundation of Christ’s love? The wise builder listens, trusts, and acts, letting God’s Word shape every decision and every choice. This is the hope that Advent calls us to nurture—a hope that is alive, resilient, and active.

Sometimes, it is tempting to postpone listening or to follow advice that seems easier or more convenient. Yet Jesus assures us that true security comes from living His teaching with our hearts and hands fully committed. Maranatha!—Come, Lord, and help us to build our lives on You, so that no storm can shake the hope You place within us.

Question to Ponder: Am I building my life on the firm foundation of Jesus’ words, or on things that cannot withstand life’s storms?
