Luke 11:29–32 THE SIGN ALREADY GIVEN

Year A, Wednesday of the First Week of Lent

In today’s Gospel, people ask Jesus for a sign. They want something extraordinary — clear proof that will convince them to believe. But Jesus responds by saying that no sign will be given except the sign of Jonah.

The people of Nineveh changed their lives simply by hearing Jonah’s preaching. They listened, recognized their need to change, and turned back to God. Jesus reminds His listeners that someone greater than Jonah is already among them — yet many still refuse to listen.

This Gospel speaks directly to us during Lent. Often, we wait for dramatic moments before we change: a powerful experience, a crisis, or a clear sign from God. We may think, “If only God showed me something unmistakable, then I would believe more, pray more, or change my life.” But Lent reminds us that God has already spoken. The greatest sign has already been given — Jesus Himself: His words, His mercy, His cross, and His resurrection.

Conversion usually does not begin with extraordinary events. It begins quietly — in daily choices:

• choosing patience instead of anger,

• honesty instead of excuses,

• prayer instead of distraction,

• forgiveness instead of resentment.

God often works not through dramatic signs but through gentle invitations repeated each day.

The question is not whether God is speaking, but whether we are listening. Lent becomes fruitful when we stop waiting for something spectacular and begin responding to the grace already present in our lives.

Question to Ponder: Am I waiting for a sign from God, or am I responding to the ways He is already calling me to change?
