WHEN LOVE IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN RULES
LUKE 6:1-6 – Saturday of the 22nd Week in Ordinary Time
In today's Gospel, the Pharisees criticize Jesus' disciples for picking grain on the Sabbath. Jesus reminds them that the Sabbath was never meant to become a burden or a weapon against people. “The Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.” God's commandments are meant to lead us toward love, mercy, and a deeper relationship with Him—not toward judgment and condemnation.
Sometimes we can become so focused on rules that we forget the person standing in front of us. We may quickly judge someone because they don't pray the way we do, don't participate as we expect, or don't live up to our standards. Even in the Church, we can become more concerned about what is permitted and what is forbidden than about whether someone is hurting, searching, or in need of mercy. Jesus does not tell us to ignore God's law; He teaches us to understand its purpose. The law of God should lead our hearts toward God and toward one another.
Perhaps today's Gospel invites us to ask: Have my religious practices made me more loving and compassionate—or more judgmental? It is possible to be very faithful in religious observance and still have a heart that is far from God. Jesus wants more than our external obedience; He wants a heart capable of mercy. Let us ask Him today for the grace to see people not through the eyes of judgment, but through the eyes of compassion. When love becomes the heart of our obedience, we begin to understand what it truly means to follow Christ.
